OUR CLUB - SUNCOASTERS SQUARE DANCE CLUB
Suncoasters Square Dance Club has over 80 members, ranging in age from their twenties to over eighty, all sharing a common belief that Square Dancing really is: “Fun, Fitness and Friendship — Set to Music.” Suncoasters was a long-held dream of Caller Nev McLachlan and has been bringing people together through Square Dancing since 1970. Our Story
1970 Suncoasters held its first dance at the Nambour Showgrounds Hall.
The Club was officially named and registered with the Square Dancing Society of Queensland.
Dancing commenced at the Woombye School of Arts Hall.
1985 — A major milestone was reached when Suncoasters moved into its own home the newly built Sunshine Coast Square Dance Centre at Buderim.
2026 — On 30 May, Suncoasters celebrated its 56th Birthday —
56 years of dancing, friendship, laughter and welcoming people to our activity. And we're still dancing! New dancers and visitors are always welcome to come along and discover why Suncoasters has remained such an important part of Square Dancing on the Sunshine Coast for more than half a century.
OUR CENTRE THE SUNSHINE COAST SQUARE DANCE CENTRE
The Sunshine Coast Square Dance Centre opened in the Maroochy Shire Council's Ballinger Park Sporting Complex on the first weekend of August 1985. The Centre fulfilled a long-held dream of Suncoasters Square Dance Club and became a reality with the assistance of the late Clive and Ada Latcham, together with tremendous support from many others. Assistance from the Council in securing a grant through the Community Employment Programme, fundraising by Suncoasters Square Dance Club Inc., and private donations from the Centre's Trustees all contributed to making the dream a reality. In August 2026, the Sunshine Coast Square Dance Centre proudly celebrated its 41st Anniversary. A Special Home for Dancing Located at 260 Dixon Road, Buderim, just off the Sunshine Motorway in the heart of the Sunshine Coast, the Centre is set within approximately seven acres of grounds. Around two acres surrounding the hall are fenced and landscaped, with picnic tables and barbecue facilities providing an attractive outdoor area for dancers and visitors to enjoy. The Sunshine Coast Square Dance Centre holds a very special place in Australian Square Dance history as the first purpose-built Square Dance hall in Australia. Over the years, it has welcomed dancers and visitors from throughout Australia and around the world, both individually and as part of organised tour groups. Inside the Centre At the heart of the Centre is its impressive 20 x 25 metre hardwood dance floor. The floor was specially constructed to “float” separately from the walls, providing an excellent surface for dancing. The Centre also features a large stage, fully equipped kitchen and amenities, together with good lighting and ventilation. Ceiling fans and three large exhaust fans help keep dancers comfortable. A Centre for the Square Dance Community Regular Square Dance functions are held at the Centre, including special events featuring Guest Callers from throughout Australia and overseas. Its Sunshine Coast location also makes the Centre an ideal destination for visiting dancers, with the region's many renowned tourist attractions providing plenty to see and do away from the dance floor. Maintained by Volunteers The Sunshine Coast Square Dance Centre continues to operate thanks to a small and dedicated group of volunteers who give their time to care for and maintain this very special facility. Additional volunteers are always welcome, and fundraising and sponsorship are important in helping us meet the ongoing costs of maintaining and improving the Centre. After 41 years, our Centre continues to provide a home for Square Dancing and other dance activities on the Sunshine Coast — and we look forward to welcoming dancers through its doors for many years to come.
